Still Life

For this piece I set up multiple still life compositions and drew many quick sketches in pencil to find the right composition. After that, I used oil paint on canvas to create this still life composition I used a triadic colour palette to block in the colours and then I added different colours and values on top to create the highlights and shadows.

Adventure Flower

For this project we had to take flowers and represent the idea of adventure into a piece of art by choosing a specific flower and certain colours and shapes. We were told that the colours and shapes may or may not be true to the flower, but instead help to show adventure more clearly. I chose to use acrylic to recreate the bird of paradise flower because the flower resembles a bird in flight. By using acrylic, the viewer is able to see my brush strokes throughout the painting which helps to establish the theme of adventure. For the background, I used an analogous colour scheme, blue-green at the top, green in the middle and yellow-green at the bottom. By making the background streaky with these different shades of green it helps to create an atmosphere that makes it appear like the wind is blowing.

Black and White Abstract

For this project we had to incorporate the Gestalt Principles (closure, proximity, similarity, common fate, connectedness, continuation, and figure- ground) into an abstract piece of artwork.

A-Frame House Plan

After completing the rendering of the A-Frame house, I used my Auto-CAD skills to create a floor plan. To ensure I used accurate house measurements, I found a floor plan on the internet and used those exterior measurements for the approximate size of house, and I based everything else off of those measurements.

A-Frame House Rendering

For this project, I used cool grey markers to render the house, and a black fine tip marker to add the details. I started with researching a-frame houses to look for inspiration and I sketched out different ideas before coming to my final design. I liked the idea of having a loft on the upper level with dormers to create more space. I also love natural light, and I feel, with a house that is not large, like this one, natural light is important. I made sure to include a large window on the side of the house, and many other windows on the main floor to incorporate natural light.

Butterfly

I used watercolour paints and a fine tip brush to create this whimsical looking butterfly. My concept for this was to create a piece that would go nicely in a child’s bedroom. By using bright, yet soft colours it creates a peaceful atmosphere. As a designer, I feel that one could use the colours in this painting to use as inspiration for a colour palette for a child’s room.

Custom Alphabet

I used shaving cream and food colouring in a small tin foil dish to create my own unique font. I sprayed the shaving cream into the dish and flattened it out so I would have a smooth surface to create the letters on. After that I dropped food colouring at the main points of the specific letter. I used a plastic tool to “connect the dots” to form the letter. To transfer the food colouring I put a piece of paper on top it and pressed down onto the paper to transfer the image. After taking the paper and scraping off the excess shaving cream, I let it dry and scanned the letter into my computer and erased the background of each letter to create a white background.
